The town lies 6 kms to the southwest of Kathmandu, just past the prestigious Tribhuvan University. Only 4 miles separate Chobhar from Kirtipur (about a 10 minute drive)
The town which dates from 1099 A.D., straddles two hills and a large pond in between. It is a natural fortress.
With steep hillsides. A part of the original walled fortifications can still be seen. It offers quaint streets leading to temple squares and well preserved old houses. The people here have a reputation as weavers and builders. Things to see here include the Chilamchu Stupa atop the southern hill and the temple of Bhairav on the northern one. The Shiva Parvati Temple offers a magnificent view of the capital.

A Buddhist Institute and International Retreat Centre, Drubyud Dargye Nunnery are also located in Kirtipur.
Notable by its very distinctive architectural spires is the Thai-Style Buddhist Temple, Srikirti Vihara, Naya Bazar, in Kirtipur.
